You are special. Manners matter. Treat others the way you want to be treated. Your life can be what you want it to be. Take the days one day at a time. Always play fair. Count your blessings, not your troubles. Don't put limits on yourself. It's never too late. Put things back where you found them. Decisions are too important to leave to chance. Reach for the stars. Clean up after yourself. Nothing wastes more energy than worrying. The longer you carry a problem, the heavier it gets. Say "I'm sorry" when you hurt someone. A little love goes a long way. Friendship is always a good investment. Don't take things too seriously. Do you have any other Grandma sayings to add? Are there any sayings here that you would do well to focus a little more on? I know that I need to remember 'the longer you carry a problem the heavier it gets.' That's so true! |

Sounds like a wise grandma to me. Mine said many of the same things.
One of her favorites was - Don't put the cart before the horse. She was trying to teach me patience. I'm still trying to learn.

Her favorite saying was:
Eat it up Wear it out Make it do Or go without. Maggie, what a great thread.

The grandmother I never met (she died before I was born) always told my dad:
"When children are little they step on your toes, when they're big they step on your heart" My mom gave me this advice before I got married: "Sometimes you have to say 'I'm sorry, I was wrong' when you AREN'T sorry and you WEREN'T wrong, just to make peace and get on with life. Every year of my life I appreciate that advice even more. Sometimes there are issues that would never be resolved if someone didn't haul in their horns. Sometimes there is no way to settle a disagreement - no way to make two people see something the same way.

Of the good in you I can speak
but not of the evil for what is evil except goodness tortured by it's own hunger and thirst and when good hungers it seeks food even in dark caves and when good thirsts it drinks even of dead waters I plagerized this verse as my own in the 5th grade and recieved 18 mos counciling to show for it. Admit I copied? NEVER in 18 mos! My grandma (mom's mom) was the only person who didn't think I was crazy. She thought it to be a "profound and gifted perception" of true humanality make sure you read that word right. I doubt she would be proud of me still, because I have let this "truth" go unsaid so many times since. Yet my heart swells to know that today when I hit send..... This legacy from my Grandma may touch someone who really needed to hear it. My Grandma's advice to the world was FORGIVE so that you might be forgiven. GEEZ..... ever notice how all the best advice is already givin before? |

As I read through these wise and wonderful sayings of our Grandmothers, I wonder whether we will ever be as wise? Maybe the tougher times many of our grandmothers lived through taught them more than our present (easy by comparison) time will ever teach us?
Chelle... that's such a lovely verse! I love your little story about it. Janet... those kids sure do step on your heart when they get older! Have you noticed that it's always the woman who says sorry to make amends! Never the man...oh NO!! CJ... I think I will print your Grandma's saying and keep it where I can see it often. It's such good advice. Pat...It's taken me a long time to learn about the horse and cart! Another saying of my Grandmother was "It takes two to tango!" |

Maggie, I think you are right. The times our grandmas lived through gave them a wisdom that we aren't so quick to see anymore.
I love this thread and think each one of you have been blessed with wonderful grandmas. This is definately a thread to be printed out and saved!

If we ever had to wear clothing that had a small repair or stain, my granny would say "It will never be seen on a galloping horse!" meaning it wouldn't be noticeable unless you pointed it out.
I'm sure there are more -- I wish I could think of them. I think I will ponder this today and try to think of some more! This is a super thread! |
