Default Old Fashioned Meat and Bakery Markets

I was just preparing to do some shopping this morning and am going to make a stop at a small meat market in a town (Remer) about 14 miles from the house. The market is always clean and the meats are well displayed. You can point at what you want, say "Good Morning" and tell the butcher how much and what youd like. I've chatted with the butcher and he tells me that there are people who still shop each day for their meats. They never freeze the meat, they usually use it that day. He tells me that the market has been there since 1940 and has been in his family all this time. He can remember when the floors were of wood (they still are, but covered by tiles) and he can remember when all the meat was cut by hand, not a slicer.

I've gotten the best meats from this market. The steaks are slized to the thickness that we like them, the meat is always fresh and lean.
I also slip into this wonderful bakery whenever I'm in Grand Rapids, MN. I've purchased several cakes here and they still use the old fashioned icing reciepe, the type I remember when I was a child. Very sugary and very stiff. Yumm! They also have the hard crusted breads, they type I love. Their cookies are second to none - especially the old fashioned "Refridgerator" cookies. It's like my grandmother's spirte came back just to be at this bakery.

I was wondering if anyone else here shops at speciality markets?

I wish I had a butcher shop or a bakery but we have neither one. I especially would love the bakery! I remember that there was a butcher shop up town when I was very young but it's been gone for years. At one time we had a deli/bakery but again it's been long gone. I would love for them to come back and I would love an old timey ice cream parlor

Just back from my shopping. Purchased some center cut chops at $1.49/lb and a turkey, which they quatered for me. I have them do this so that I can cook some for my DH, have 1/2 for our dinner and make soup from a 1/4.
They're hams looked so good too! But my sister let it out of the bag that she's sending us a "Honey Baked" ham for our Easter dinner. I'd rather she send herself and her family.

Went for a ride into Walker (about 20 miles from us) and browsed through the shops. Almost all of them are having their wintre clearances right now. Boy, sure wish I had a few extra dollars to spend!

We have both, but not in our town, in the town about 20 minutes from us. The bakery is awesome and has the best dainties I've tasted. Very reasonable in price as well.

The butcher is in a small store, where I often get groceries from. We haven't boughten meat there in quite some time, because our freezer is half full of meat. But we have and its wonderful to go and ask for a special cut, not like the superstores.

When we lived in Winnipeg, we had a wonderful meat market about 10 minutes from us. They had just the best beef around and very reasonable prices. I do miss that store. They also had the best cheese in Winnipeg I think!!

I shopped in Winnepeg several times when we lived in North West MN. The first time that we were there, we took a wrong turn on our way to MN North West Angle.

The shops there are great! Such a great city too. Reminded me of the old Detroit or Windsor.
