I don't crotchet. You can often find patterns on sale for $1-2 at JoAnn fabrics or other sewing establishments. You need to watch for the sales though, because regular priced patterns make it impossible to save money by making your own. Also buy from the sale bins for $1-3/yard. Look for the Easy (Make it tonight, Wear it Tomorrow) patterns to start out with. Cheap fabric can be found at thrift stores too. If you're really thrifty, you can purchase over-sized garments at the thrift store, tear out the seams and use the fabric to make something new. My husband's gramma used to do that all the time.

There are tons of free crochet patterns on the internet. Just google "free crochet patterns" and you'll get oodles of pages.
