I found 3 ideas for you - this is a tough smell to get rid of!
1. This applies to all of the solutions: Blot, don't rub, as much of the urine out of the carpet as you can. Then, using cold water, blot again until the excess liquid is removed. a. While the area is damp, rub in baking soda - let dry and vacuum. or b. After the blot up, use 1/2 cup white vinegar in 1 quart of warm water. Dampen the are and lay white cloth (rags) on the area and weight it down with a heavy object until it's all soaked up and dry. Then use a plastic hairbrush to bring the nap of the carpet back up or c. After blotting the are, mix up 3% peroxide with water - didn't say how much - and add Listerine mouth wash (a few drops) to the mix. Dampen the area again and blot. Maggie, I hate to say this but it sounds like it's going to be an ongoing problem. Cat pee is just so unbearable expecially if it happens often. Hope one of the above remedies works for you. There are also store-bought solutions usually sold in the pet store that may be more effective. Good luck!

Don't know why I put Maggie's name into my post! I worked too hard this weekend, to the point of exhaustion! Sorry Chris.

You might find products that will reduce the odor, but in my opinion, plan on throwing out anything a cat peed on. We had to remove all the carpet in the house because of this, and then even the cement slab still had a bit of odor.

I'm sorry ladies, I think both these first two posts are at best dubious and at worst spam. Neither profile makes much sense and they read like they are both written by the same person. It seems to be just another way to post 'spam'. One new poster asks a seemingly reasonable question...and then the other coincidentally also new!) poster answers a short time later promoting a product or a site.

I was kind of wondering about that too - however, cat pee can be a real problem. Any enzymatic odor remover should work - they break down the proteins that cause the odor. Also, lemon juice and or borax may help (diluted). I usually succeed pretty well at this and have ALWAYS had cats - who will pee when they are upset. The only thing I've failed entirely to get the smell out of was a suitcase - and of course it had to be a really good one!

Odour Ban, was recommended by our veternarian's office. It is what they use in the clinic. It neutralizes urine, and has a fresh scent.
Read here for how to use Odour Ban on pet urine: http://www.ecki.com/vst/prdt12.htm We purchase a gallon bottle, plus it comes with a full spray bottle, at Sam's Club, for about $10.00 US.

Thanks! I used to get that at Sam's but they have either quit carrying it or have been out the last several times I've been there. It works on animal smells, but also many others (like cigarette smoke, which used to be an issue with my dad). I actually used to carry a coke bottle of diluted to use on hotel rooms that I didn't like the smell of, etc.
