Would you be willing to dress as the Hutterites or Amish do? Why or why not?

View Full Version : Clothing and what you would wear? Old fashioned mamma 01-17-2004, 02:38 PM Would you be willing to dress as the Hutterites or Amish do? Why or why not? PrairieRose 01-17-2004, 08:06 PM No I wouldn't b/c I lurve my blue jeans! Actually I have to say that I'm tooooo vain as well. I like to look like I'm at least attempting to be "in style", although I know MANY who know me personally would get a good chuckle out of that! prairiemaid 01-17-2004, 09:52 PM I would be willing if I were Amish or Hutterite. lol! It would take getting used to it for me as I don't like wearing dresses, especially in the winter. My legs ache! I know, I'm weird. I'd wear long underwear under my dress all the time. Other than the dress part, I don't think I'd have a problem. I dress very plain already. blueknitter 01-19-2004, 07:45 PM I don't like the idea of wearing long loose skirts around the fire, but that's really my only hesitation. DD would wear long, circular skirts every day if she could, and layers her pinafores over her long skirts like aprons for fun, anyway. I imagine I could deal with it as long as I had long johns or leggings on with the skirts. Old fashioned mamma 01-19-2004, 08:19 PM BK, my dd is exactly the same. She'd wear a long dress all the time if it was possible. But with the cold weather, I prefer she wear jeans so keep her warm so I can keep the heat down. I don't know if I could dress like them. It just seems so simple how they dress. I'm always amazed at their life/lifestyle. doodlebug 01-23-2004, 01:37 AM I think I could get used to wearing dresses all the time. As I get older I seem to find skirts and dresses more comfy than jeans anyway and have been thinking about just wearing jean skirts instead. I do wonder though if I could keep warm enough in the winter, maybe cuddleduds would work or tights. Wearing dresses in the summer is something I like to do anyway because they are cooler than jeans or shorts. Michelle 01-23-2004, 02:36 AM I would love to dress as they do--if I were one of them. I won't dress like them in my current lifestyle. :) paelthom 01-23-2004, 01:53 PM I don't think I could do it. I hate my legs to get cold and I am one that dresses comfortably. I have to dress in business clothing for work but when I am at home its a big, loose shirt and soft, comfortable pants and big old warm bedroom shoes. smnoel 01-23-2004, 02:13 PM I dress very conservatively and was raised wearing dresses. Once I became a teen, I wanted to wear jeans more often though. I don't think I'd want to dress the same daily, but wouldn't mind wearing dresses daily and dressing simply and conservatively. Kindred-Spirit 02-11-2004, 12:14 AM Yes and we do dress that way for our Church. We are Mennonite and we celebrate the Old Order by having a Old Fashion Night. We will be dressing for it again next month. During the summer I would miss wearing shorts, but I guess you would guess use to it. forestdale 04-11-2004, 11:08 PM I'd love to dress like that, although my family and friends would think I'd gone totally (and not just partially) insane. I love their dresses and aprons. I love plain things, I feel more confortable in dresses and skirts now and I also like layering clothes, so for me it would be perfect. Mel 04-25-2004, 03:25 PM I would not mind the dresses, but the long sleeves would have to go, I hate having things on my arms, it makes me feel trapped! I can handle a sweater if cold but otherwise.... I had my wedding gown sleeves altered, to short sleeves for my March wedding because I refused to go through the ceremony uncomforatable! |
