I purchased two of them the first year we were here. I painted one black and still have the second one to do. I plan on placing them on my front steps and filling them with flowers. Do you remember those old washtubs.
What type of flowers would you put in them, to really highlight the tubs and yet be able to see the beauty of the flowers as well?

I love the old washtubs. Can use them for so many neat things. My great aunt still washed in them when I was a little girl and went to visit. She had a huge garden so they would often be filled with green beans, peans, lettuce, anything she had an abundance of. They were also filled with laundry from the line instead of a laundry basket. Hers I remember were very light. Are yours CJ?
I think a mass of wave petunias would be beautiful as they would trail down over the tub with a few spikes in the center. Also what might be neat is to plant a package of wildflowers and you'd have an array of many different kinds.

I think the look of wildflowers in a washtub sounds perfect. Happy Planting!

I think, I'd put about six inches of drainage gravel or shipping popcorn in the bottom and plant in containers, on top of that. You really don't need that much dirt, for most anything, and it will make for poor drainage. Are you going to drill holes in the bottom? If not, use flower pots with drip trays, to save the tub, for years to come. An old tub will rust, if it is galvanized and/or has welded parts.
