View Full Version : Where do you get your water supply from?
Old fashioned mamma 01-17-2004, 02:22 PM Is it safe? Have you ever had problems with it?
Living in town, we have running water which comes from a well. Our water is extremely hard, but wonderful drinking water. Our son sent us a water cooler form Christmas and I'm wondering if it is even worth it to use or just to continue drinking our own drinking water. I'm also wondering if our water, because it is so hard, will cause any sort of crust on the inside of the cooler. It does on everything else.
Tell me about your water.
Aussie Mamma 01-17-2004, 06:21 PM We have city water and it tastes terrible (at least I think it does). We have a filter on our refrigerator and the water tastes wonderful after going through it.
smnoel 01-17-2004, 06:30 PM We have city water, but before we moved here we had well water. The well water was horrible and left residue on everything. Our city water is so chlorinated that whenever we shower or run the tub it smells like a pool. :(
I don't drink the city water often, but it's not bad water. I use it for cooking. We have a water cooler and I drink from that.
PrairieRose 01-17-2004, 08:10 PM We have well water and in my humble opinion it's the best water I've ever tasted anywhere. We don't have any problems with it other than it's very hard and leaves shale in our hot water heater and causes build up in the shower.
paelthom 01-17-2004, 09:27 PM We have well water and it tastes good. Ours only leaves a slight mineral residue on the toilets. It's fine for laundry and everything else. We've had it tested and it's fine. I used to have city water and the chlorine smell would knock you over some times.

Can you explain to me what a water cooler is? I don't think it means the same thing to me as it does to you. Is it like a Brita?
Old fashioned mamma 01-18-2004, 12:17 AM Margret, here it is:

Old fashioned mamma 01-18-2004, 12:21 AM My biggest concern is will get a residue build up from our water.
Second, if we purchase water, the lowest we can get is $3.33 per jug. Now I'm drinking lots of water and so do the kids, so we probably would go through a jug in a day, day and a half. That gets pretty expensive if were purchasing water. I'd like to put our own water in the jug, but theres where my concern comes in - will I get residue and then the cooler doesn't work.
I love cold water and we really like our drinking water already. I may bring it back and get something else instead. Just not sure yet.

Ok, that's what I call water cooler too. lol
I'm not sure why you would put your own water in the jugs when you can just turn the tap on?
Old fashioned mamma 01-18-2004, 09:39 PM Margret, it would be fine in the winter when our water is very cold, but in the summer, our water is not near as cold. I drink lots of water now, but it has to be very very cold and the cooler would keep it cold, kwim.
I talked to our son and I may take it to Canadian Tire and trade it on something else. It just doesn't seem practical for us to keep it. I'll just continue to put water jugs in the fridge and get them cold that way.
blueknitter 01-19-2004, 07:33 PM Can you explain to me what a water cooler is? I don't think it means the same thing to me as it does to you. Is it like a Brita?
I have a Brita and she's washing dishes right now. :hurray:
We have a nice, deep well that has fantastic water, but is in need of a new pump. We'll replace that this spring. Our water is rather hard, but it tastes so good I can't complain.
Iowamom 01-24-2004, 06:04 AM We have well water also. It has been tested and is fit to drink but since there is so much farming in the area I don't really trust it, I buy our drinking water, I do use the tap when I am cooking, using boiling water. The water is hard also, but not bad enough to leave any marks, once a week I do take a baggy with some vinegar in it and put the baggy over the showerheads and rubberband it on and leave it on for the night and this helps clean it up. I am going to invest in a water softener as soon as we can, the hard water is too hard on the dishwasher we recently got.
doodlebug 01-24-2004, 10:12 PM We have a well that is very shallow and in farm country so it is iffy about being clean. When we bought this house there was already a water softener installed and the owners were made to put in a bacteria light thingy that kills off bacteria before we were allowed to buy the house. And we also have a filter. So, I figure our water is probably the safest water in the world and it does taste pretty good. And I sure do love the water softener; every house I've ever lived in has had horrible hard water and it was so difficult to clean the showers and stuff and it clogged up the water heater. Here our water is sooo soft and leaves no residue at all!
