When you have dirty feet, do you have a mud room or special area that you enter the house thru? We have a mud area. Its an alcove from the garage to the foyer with its on separate door and ceramic floor to catch the muddy boots and wet coats. We tend to use this during the warmer months. In the winter Mel tends to come in thru the basement since that's where the wood stove is. Needless to say, the basement is always a wreck, but at least it's on the unfinished side. When we come in and don't have muddy/dirty shoes we come in thru our front door. I have a coat rack by the door. It's actually a bench with a tall back and hooks for coats and hats. Very handy. How about you?

Not really, I have the back covered deck/sun porch, which I"ve put 2 big walk off mats to help dozer's paws and our feet lose some of the dirt before coming in. I keep my garden shoes in there, to slip on and off and keep out there for gdn prps.
In front, my front door opens onto a landing covered with vinyl flooring which is good. One set stairs goes up, the other goes down. The landing is only the width of the 2 sets of stairs, and collects a LOT of dirt.
I have a mat outside, and one just inside, but I like the fact that the landing gets the dirt. It contains a lot of it, I can mop it up with the dead dishcloth no problem on the way down to the laundry and if it gets really bad, I can still get it shining in a minute and a half.
I think the mudroom concept is WONDERFUL though and would love to have one with an attached bathroom and laundry.

No. I don't have one here, but sure wish I did. We do have a slate entryway, so that really helps keep things cleaner when we take our shoes off there. We also have an enclosed porch off the garage, so could use that to keep mud and snow to a minimum. So far, we've been doing ok as far as tracking dirt etc. We have hardwoods and that is so much easier to clean than carpet for that type of thing.

No, but I sure wish we did. We have an enclosed porch that we use in the summer for everyone's boots, etc. But its not insulated, so everything has to come into my kitchen. Were looking at possibly insulating it this summer - still in the thought process though.

Yes, and I don't know how I got along without one before! We just put an addition on our house and that was one of the things we added on. When you come in the front door, you can turn left toward the kitchen, right toward the livingroom or go straight into the mudroom/basement stairs area. We have congoleum in our foyer area, so we can walk right into the mud room with whatever on our feet and take off the muddy or wet shoes in there. My only regret is that it's not bigger. Somehow we all seem to end up in there at the same time and we end up tripping over each other trying to get coats and shoes on. Of course it's usually a mess in there, but at least it's in there and not the first thing you see when you walk in. The best part is the door! When it shuts, no one but me knows what a rat hole it is!!! :)
