Tips for being outdoors:
~The most important tip of all is to respect winter. (It may look warm or be nice out when you leave, but within minutes winter can rear its ugly head and things can change rapidly.)
~Stay warm by wearing wind and waterproof layered clothing. Make sure your clothing allows your body to breath and stay warm if you should happen to get wet. Always stay dressed even if you find your warm, especially your head and your feet.
~Stay dry. Bring extra socks with you so if your socks get wet, you can change into dry socks. Carry extra pairs in your vehicle as well.
~Stay nourished. High energy snack foods, such as nuts, raisins, dried fruit and candy bards creat quick heat energy. Water prevents dehydration. Avoid eating snow as it contributes to heat loss.
~Keep moving. Don't stand still in one place. Move your arms and legs; jog on the spot. (This is hard to do when you have your family, because often the kids want to climb a hill. Quickly though you can get very cold if you stand still.)
~Never go alone. Bring along a friend or family member. (Just recently a guy went alone on a overnight camp. There was a huge snowstorm and in the morning, he found that the path he was on had disappeared. It was a long time before the police found him and he may lose his big toe. He is lucky he survived.)
~Dress warmly, and if you bring your children, more so. You should have several layers, including boots, hats and mitts. (We always take extra mitts with us and extra hats because the kids always get those wet first. We also have extra blankets in our vehicle should they end up extremely cold.)
~Set reasonable time limits to be outside. If your kids are playing outside, call them in to allow them to warm up. Give them warm drinks such as hot chocolate.
~Always have a first aid kit with you.
Our family loves going out in the winter and we especially enjoy going for walks in the parks, where there is pavement so there are paths. We are extremely careful though when we do so. So quickly weather can change. When we have the kids with us, we are even more cautious.
