View Full Version : What breeds of dogs, cats and pets do you have and like
Canadian gardener 01-04-2004, 02:48 AM We have a darling little girl dog who is mixed but mostly border collie with a dash of blue heeler in her. She is a smart little person, built very small and fine boned for a border, with gigantic ears that stick straight up when she is puzzled or listening or alert.
She loves to go for car rides with us, and sits up in the back like a queen, in a royal car. She notices peasant dogs but doesn't wag or bark. Shatteringly dignified actually. Sometimes looks up at me and I feel like I'm not quite up to her standards.
We used to have and very much miss our old Samoyed gentleman dog with his big white fuzzy coat, curly tail and perpetually smiling face that matched his sunny disposition. He died of extreme old age for his breed at 14.5 years.
I like labs but haven't owned one ever.
What precious personalities do you share your life and homestead with?
Old fashioned mamma 01-04-2004, 03:28 AM We have cats and kittens. Our adult cat is a main coon cat and has quite the personality. She is dd's cat, follows her everywhere and sleeps with her. When she was a baby, dd would dress her up in a baby dress and put her in a stroller and walk her everywhere.
We just rescued a cat from the dump and unbeknown to us, she was pregnant. We now have 3 kittens, but we've gotten rid of the mother. We are also giving up 2 of the kittes. Its just too much to take care of.
We want a dog, but we've put that off for a bit.
If we had a acreage, we'd have all kinds of animals. Both dd and I love animals. But alas, thats not to be, so will just enjoy the pets we now have.
Dd still talks about your dogs Canadian Gardener. She loved your samoyed and she only spent a little time with him. I can imagine how much you must miss him after all those years.
BushBrigade 01-04-2004, 04:36 AM My baby is a Black Lab - Zoë...She has such a wonderful, friendly personality! She's the first one to greet me in the mornings & the last one to tell me good night in the evenings! She was a shelter baby - GW bought her for me as a birthday gift last year ~ she was constant companion throughout the war and although she's had to give up "her side" of the bed since Daddy came home, she still sleeps on the bed, just at my feet! I'd be lost without her!
My middle daughter picked out her kitty - ButterCup - right after we moved to Texas. She was a PetSmart adoption that had been severely abused - someone had swung her around by her tail & it had to be amputated...she has about 3" left. She's so protective of Belle! If she's spending the night away from home, ButterCup will roam the halls meowing - so sad!!
In the past, we've had: three Pomeranians, German Shepherd, Husky, Samoyed, Poodle, and two other Labs....I've always had a passion for Golden Retrievers, although I've never had one....I'm not really a cat person, although I love "Butters"....
One of these days when we're rich ;) I'd love to open my own rescue! Here's hoping!!
Canadian gardener 01-04-2004, 05:19 PM Cats are wonderful fur people. If I wasn't allergic I'd have several. They are very loyal and attached to their people contrary to popular belief. Doesn't affect their self sufficient nature, they still have that, but they are full of love for their person. :cutie:
We had a goldfish we called Stacker, because he ate like a little piggy and had such a round body, he looked like that fish on the computer program that was called stacker 10 years back. It was a blowfish which tells you something about Stacker.
He co existed peacefully with the neon gang which was what we called our little school of neon tetras. Quite peaceful but they existed as a group and didn't have the personality of Stacker.
Stacker used to watch us thru the tank and get excited and beg for food making kissy lips at the surface. Which may explain why we fed him enough to make him a fat little guy.
We gave our tank and it's personalities away to a good home when we moved here, but I've always missed having the fish around.
Old fashioned mamma 01-04-2004, 05:38 PM CG, I totally forgot to mention our Beta. I call him Cleo (although dd says thats a cat's name). Everytime he sees me, he rises to the top of the bowl. Its a large bowl (with a flower on top), but Cleo knows I'm the one that feeds him. I'd love to get another one, although I'd have to have 2 seperate bowls. They can't be together in one bowl. I really enjoy watching that little guy, just such a calming effect on you.
Aussie Mamma 01-04-2004, 07:11 PM We have 3 Australian Shepherds.
Chloe is the oldest (6 yrs. last Nov.) and is a black tri. She was the runt of her litter so she's a tiny little thing height wise, but she's tubby because she won't exercise! LOL! She loves to play frisbee (when motivated to do so) and is very much a prissy little thing. She hates to get wet and will prance across the yard (not venturing too far out) when it's wet like a show horse. The breeder told us Chloe's mom has the same personality. She also loves to run and jump into dh's arms.
Ginger is the next. She'll be 6 yrs. old in just a few days and she is a red merle. She's stocky built - comes from a herding line/background. She very much has the herding instinct in her and has been known to herd ds in the backyard. She is rough and tumble, doesn't mind getting dirty or wet, and loves to chase and retrieve her toy football. She also very much loves to ride in the car - so much so that you can't say those words in front of her, you literally have to spell them out or she will go to the door and cry and whine and pace until you take her for a ride! I have made the mistake of saying it in front of her and then had to take her for a ride around the neighborhood to satisfy her. :icon_lol: She is the queen of kisses and will kiss and kiss and kiss you until you make her stop.
Charlie is the youngest, is a black tri and will be 3 in June of this year. We rescued him in Sept. 2002 from the state Aussie rescue group. He is one of the goofiest dogs I've ever been around, but is a sweetheart. It's evident he was abused and mistreated in his former life and he is so appreciative to be with a family who loves him now. He loves to sleep on the foot of ds's bed and thinks that any piece of furniture that he so wishes to hop up on is his. It is amazing to watch him run in the yard - it's like watching a greyhound. He is so incredibly fast and can jump up over my 6 ft. tall dh's head!
BushBrigade 01-05-2004, 07:14 PM OOPS! Forgot our fishie friends!
We have a male Beta - Nemo - who is Katie's baby!
We have a female Beta - Liberty - who is Belle's baby!
We have three Bala Sharks - Flotsom, Jetsom, & Ursula - who are mine!
AND a Tetra/Neon - Dennis - who is the biggest little lover fish ever!!
I really believe that they know when it's feeding time! The sharks come to the top & Dennis sort of hangs out - he knows that the sharks will only eat what falls & Dennis will scarf up what's left on top!!
They are so relaxing! It's hard to be a stress ball watching them!!
PrairieRose 01-05-2004, 08:14 PM We have a little apricot female poodle who is my constant companion. Her name is Heidi and she is the sweetest and smartest dog. She lurves my dh (Gripey) as much as she loves me and every moment that one of us is sitting in a chair she is there as well. She loves to go, anywhere. I adore poodles and am soooo happy to have another one after having had one when I was young.
We have 2 cats who stay outdoors. They are 1 mixed breed calico named Sheba and a persian/himalayan named Marvin. Marvin is not impressed with being an outdoor kitty and I so hated having to put her outside but she would not mind her house manners and we couldn't tolerate that. She is a real pain, as she has the personality of a siamese and then all that hair that I am trimming on all of the time as it mats. (ugh)
summercat 01-05-2004, 09:05 PM I have 1 cat named C.C. she's mostly grey in color with some white and she's 4 years old.
Canadian gardener 01-06-2004, 02:45 AM fun hearing about everybody's little fur and fin :fish: type people.
Dd wants love birds when she is out and on her own, and settled with a job and all, does anyone have birds too?
Old fashioned mamma 01-06-2004, 02:54 AM We don't have any birds, but trust dd. She wants a parrot. My aunt has one and it goes everywhere with them, camping in their motor home, on vacation with them and such. Dd seen it when we visited my aunt a couple years ago and fell in love with it. She is always asking her dad if we can get one. The cost is just too prohibitive to get one right now. She'll have to wait until she gets a place of her own too, I'm thinking.
HappyMom 01-06-2004, 04:10 AM We have a yellow lab named Toby! He is 7 months old but already weighs 70 pounds and he is a big goober puppy! He is very loving and very loyal and we are very lucky to have him!
We also have a stray long hair gray kitty that I have been feeding for about 3 years now. She comes and goes and loves to tease Toby!!!!
Canadian gardener 01-06-2004, 04:22 AM They sound like an adorable pair! :icon_smil
doodlebug 01-07-2004, 03:36 AM We have two siamese kitties, Izzy and Bubbie, spoiled rotten! And we have an outside kitty, Lucy, she's small and black and getting old, she's 10 but still acts like a kitten and wow what a mouser!
seadream 01-07-2004, 01:09 PM We have 2 American Eskimo dogs, pure white and the hair drives me nuts :icon_frow
I am forever vaccuming the rugs and furniture.
We also have a cat that we found living outside at our old house and was so small and skinny when we found it, now he is big & fat :icon_bigg
Canadian gardener 01-07-2004, 02:49 PM I adore Siamese cats. They have such personality. If I wasn't badly allergic, they are the breed of cat I'd have. I love their raucous voices and their whole take on life.
I've been thinking about those cute little American Eskimo dogs. They look so like my old Samoyed, but smaller and I've been wondering about getting one or two someday.
Not now, our girl dog is definitely happy being an only dog. When Trouper, our Sammy died, she looked happy, and she makes awful faces at any interloping dogs. She isn't a happy person with other dogs, so I don't want to subject any unsuspecting puppy to her feelings on other dogs. My friend Gwen says Dozer always wanted to be an only dog, and finally got her wish. I suspect Gwen is right. :icon_lol:
PrairieRose 01-07-2004, 09:19 PM We don't have birds now Canadian Gardener but we have had in the past. I can tell you that they can make wonderful pets but they are very MESSY. And, they don't contain that mess to the cage.......that's the only reason I don't have a big bird now.
SusieJD 02-26-2004, 03:57 PM Oh, here's a chance to "brag" about my babys! We have 6 Alaskan Malamutes, a little 10 year old black cat (Gomez Adams) and a rooster!
Here's some pics from our last litter of puppies (warning, baby pictures!):
