View Full Version : Do you do spring and fall cleaning or do you prefer...
Old fashioned mamma 12-27-2003, 03:37 AM To do a bit each month?
I always remember my mom, grandmother and great grandmother talking about their spring or fall cleaning. They'd work overtime for a couple of weeks, doing all that spring or fall cleaning. Everything had to be washed, air outed or dusted. Rugs had to be hung on the line and beaten to get the dust out. Furniture was moved. All the bedding, linens, etc. were washed, even if they were clean. Anyone remember?
Do you do the same or clean a bit each month, rather than doing a big cleaning in the spring and fall?
Farmgirl 12-28-2003, 02:36 AM I remember my mom cleaning the house from top to bottom every spring and fall. I'm ashamed to admit I am not the housekeeper she is!
I tend to let things go until they are disgusting enough to bug me, then out come the buckets and sponges and everything gets a shine. But my kids would tell you I only clean for company. Whenever I tell them to clean up their rooms they say "Why? Who's coming over?" Hmph!!! Like we only clean the house when company's coming!!! Sad to say, there's probably more truth to that than I care to admit! :)
Canadian gardener 12-29-2003, 05:06 PM Due to a chronic fatigue type problem, I try to keep up to things, and not let it pile up but when I get a surge of energy I do some of the seasonal type things. I generally get the urge to dejunk several times a year and that is my spring and fall type cleaning.
paelthom 12-29-2003, 06:21 PM I am guilty of "company cleaning" too. I rush like crazy when I know we are having company. I used to do the spring/fall cleaning but now I try to do a little bit at a time as the mood hits me. I tend to clean up more on rainy or snowy days when I can't get outside. I do tend to take the junk pile to Goodwill about twice a year though.
calico 01-01-2004, 08:04 PM LOL about company coming....yup I've heard that before!
I like to keep on top of things too but it all depends what time of year. Summer I am outside most of the time and really have to work at the housecleaning! I do a big clean spring and fall and my monthly chores as well. Started this about 2 years ago and it works good.
Quaker Anne 02-08-2007, 04:01 PM I like to do a full spring cleaning - every room, every wall and corner. I pick the days carefully so I can have all windows wide open to expell the dust. It is a great way to start summer.

violet 02-08-2007, 04:21 PM I like to take care of dirty rugs and handprints on walls as needed.
I think even if I kept a perfect house, year round, that there is something very soul cleansing about spring cleaning.
It is a time of rebirth and the same can hold true for our homes.
After all, you can't clean the outside of your windows in the winter or always spare your quilt or comforter to a washing.
Freshly laundered curtains to the newly cleaned windows, all the hidden cobwebs of winter.....
Spring cleaning feels so good!
AheeK 02-09-2007, 05:20 AM I always do basic cleaning as I go along, but every so often (not necessarily in spring or fall), I tackle larger jobs, particularly cleaning out clutter. My mom does this too...her house is practically spotless, but once or twice a year she does some major decluttering and organization. LOL @ the "company cleaning." I do it too!
monkeywrangler71 02-20-2007, 03:48 PM I try to keep up with it by scheduling certain rooms/tasks for each day of the week, but then I'll have a bad or busy week and fall behind. I'll clean for company, but that's only once or twice a year anyway, and if I'm having a tired spell I don't even do a good job of that.
I do spring cleaning, but not fall cleaning. I consider Spring to begin on Feb.2 and that is typically a day for purifying my home. This year, I expect that purification to last the entire quarter (and I even started a month early), as I am doing it room by room and combining it with decluttering, painting, and setting all things in order.
violet 02-20-2007, 07:54 PM MW, oh that sounds so wonderful!
Just hearing you do this gives me so much encouragement.
maggie 02-23-2007, 09:30 PM I do the bigger cleaning whenever the mood takes me! (i.e.occasionally!:icon_lol: )
I guess when you have harsher longer winters (as most of you seem to have) then the annual spring clean is a wakening, cleansing ritual. Our winters are mild here by comparison and we don't have the extremes of seasons as you do, so spring cleaning is less ritual for me.
Must admit that I do rush about like a chook with my head cut off when visitors are coming though!
