View Full Version : Okay...what the heck is a hosta? mrscornbread 10-05-2003, 06:51 PM I have heard Sara rave over them, but dont know what they are! smnoel 10-05-2003, 07:06 PM First, ask yourself do I really want to know. lol Once you find out, there is a chance you'll become hooked. My avatar is a hosta. Here's a great gallery of hosta varieties and pictures of many. http://www.hostalibrary.org/ Barefoot Gardener 10-06-2003, 03:01 PM I have heard Sara rave over them, but dont know what they are! LOL, Robin. Sara is addicted! They are great plants and really add a lot to a shade garden. There are so many varieties and at least for me there is no way to kill'em. We had an old summer camp on our property that we had the firemen burn down for us after the flood of 96. Well that house had bunches around it.So they've been burned & mowed & still keep coming. Very prolific & easily divided too.:) mrscornbread 10-08-2003, 04:42 AM Well Darlene, if Sara hadn't sold me on them, you certainly did. If they cant be killed they are for me~ Barefoot Gardener 10-08-2003, 01:54 PM Robin, I was thinking that you may want to check how they do where you live, our climates are quite different.:) Look around your neighborhoods and see what grows well. Don't be afraid to ask homeowners about their gardens if they are out when you are admiring their landscaping. Gardeners love to talk about their gardens.;) Local nurseries are great sources of info too. frugalmel 10-08-2003, 04:40 PM Hostas are so pretty. They should be able to grow there where you live Robin. I would do like Barefoot (just love that name) suggested and check your local nursery. They will be able to tell you what plants grow well there, and which varieties of hostas will work for you. Also, if you have a unniversity extension office or website for the closest U there, they have LOTS of information on growing things. I haven't lived in CA in a while so I can't remember what the different schools are there. milach 10-08-2003, 08:58 PM Did you know there's like 300 varieties of them? Crazy...but I can imagine sara having one of each, LOL They're so indestructable, and get huge so quick!! They're also a great filler for a shady area. smnoel 10-08-2003, 10:13 PM There's actually so many varieties. lol I'm just starting to collect them. There is literally no way I could collect them all. rofl Don't I wish?!? Hostaholic's Anonymous group...here I come! We bought this house and I just knew when I saw all the shade, that it would be PERFECT for my little buddies. lol hostas4me 10-10-2003, 12:20 AM Hostas are easy to grow, shade tolerant, herbaceous perennials. Hostas are grown mainly for their beautiful foliage. Hosta’s leaves come in a wide range of shapes, colors, sizes, and textures. One common name for Hosta still used in some garden centers is Plantain Lily. Hostas are sometimes still referred to as Funkia. The hosta library, which Sara posted the link to, is all hosta addicts "on line hand-book". It is is a wonderful site full of thousands of pictures, and a wealth of information. And, once you start growing them, it is soooooooo hard to gain control over your addiction. LOL Not only do you want them all, you find yourself buying ones, that you already have, because they are such a good buy, or you might be able to trade it for one that you want, or it looks better than yours, or................I could go on and on, but I think y'all get my point. ......Hello, my name is Dee, and I'm addicted........
