Just curious as to how you do it.

I always prune mine in the fall, then mulch them to give them protection over the winter months. So far, I've always had success and they've all survived. I also give them a good watering before they are covered.

So much of what I read though says not to prune until spring.

What do you do?

I've tried both and I seem to have better luck in the fall also. I killed (I think) a couple of years ago by pruning way to early in the spring How far back do you prune yours? I've got a few that I've let get pretty tall (about 6 ft.). I did trim my Chicago Peace back pretty hard about a month ago and now have a super show on it right now.

From what I have learned in MG class, here in northern middle TN, we are supposed to wait until January to prune ours back. (we are zone 6a) That is for standard roses. I have mini roses. I am not sure what to do with them!

I prune mine back in the spring, but I'm not real quick about it...I wait until well after the frost is done. I also prune back my mini roses in the spring...but trim at them all year long as needed.

I do mine in the fall as well and have had good luck with that. :)

Fall, then remove dead stuff in the late spring when you can see what canes were winter killed.

I prune mine in the spring. This way I can tell the live branches from the dead. Since the bushes I have now are fairly new to me, I'll have to experiment with them.

This pic is of my red rose climber by our front deck. It did really well last summer and just about climbed to the top. Should I prune this down so that it will spread, instead of climb?
