Which laundry lady are you?

Attracted by the soothing rythm and smell of freshly ironed clothes and the old fashioned grace of it all

or

are you scared to go near that hot thing, because every time you do it bites you or eats up your day in mind numbing boredom

I'm for the soothing nature of it, it's like playing solitaire. Restoring my universe to order. I can't do much about the world, but I can restore our home to peaceful harmony and order. :icon_lol:

I didn't used to like it but I'm getting stranger and stranger as I age! :icon_bigg

In fact I once went just shy of 7 years without touching an iron. I know because I was counting. I'd burnt out my old iron, ironing those old foam backed drapes in one house (we were selling and I washed the drapes, big mistake!) I wanted to know just how long I could go before touching another iron.

I did a lot by whipping stuff out of the dryer or resetting it with a damp item to "iron" the clothes but a second hand ballet dress that my dd required, was given to us from the last girl to leave the troupe, and it had been crumpled in a ball and left tightly wadded and wrinkled for about a year. NOTHING I did worked so I finally bought an iron.

Just lately in the past little while I've re discovered a joy in making things smooth and wrinkle free.

It doesn't hurt that ironing also kills germs, which with cloth napkins and hankies is a rather nice thing to know.

CG, ironing is one of my favorite things to do in my home. When I was first married, a friend would call me and I'd do all her ironing for her in return for using her washing machine. I didn't have one at the time.

To this day, I love to iron. I find it very soothing, probably because my iron is in my sewing room and I can iron in a very quiet space, surrounded by my china dolls and fat quarters. How can you beat that?

I don't iron everything though. My mom use to even iron our towels. I love to iron aprons, tablecloths, anything fancy - that type of thing. It just makes everything look so much neater.

I absolutely loathe ironing. I hate every single minute of it.

I LOVE ironing!! It's my quiet time to make things look neat and tidy! Everyone thinks I'm crazy to want to iron. My cousin calls me "Martha"!! Ok, confession, I even iron my jeans!!

I really think it's attraction is the quietness of it, and the soothing repetitive motion, much like knitting, and then the feeling of restoring one little chunk of the universe to beautiful order.

The reason solitaire on the computer is so attractive is that there is in a lot of us a deep need to bring order out of chaos. It's what makes us feel satisfied and at peace with order in our homes. It also made Bill Gates even richer, as people got terribly addicted to solitaire.

CG, I have to agree about the solitude. When I'm ironing, no one else is around me. They are doing their own thing. I just quietly go into my sewing room and begin to iron. I want to get a radio of some type in there so that I can put on some music that is about nature (raindrops, water dripping), that sort of thing.

btw - hmmmm, who is addicted to solitaire???? :icon_eek: I finally had to remove it from my computer. rofl

I like to iron but find that I don't do it much because it stirs up my allergies, I must be allergic to certain dyes or types of fabric.

Ironing, what ironing, if you yank it out of the dryer fast enough, there's no need...mostly...Hum, maybe THAT's why, I look sooo frumpy, all the time...ya think???
Actually, we have built an old, fold into the wall ironing board into the new house, I figure it will serve as, my buffet table...Ha
