We live in a small rural town and were looking at ways to confine our puppy so that she doesn't run out onto the road. I don't particularly like to tie her up so I'm looking at ways to confine her.
How have you confined a puppy when outside?

Our dog Sandy only seems to go outside when we do now...she's getting older and likes to be right beside us. She has the run of the property but when we lived at our old place we had a collar on her and the electric fence around our property. It kept her in as we were near a busier road and she didn't know enough to stay put. We do tie her up "sometimes" but we are out there and it's a LONG rope so she has alot of leeway. Our neighbours had one of those contraptions that you put on the clothesline, it hangs down and the dogs rope/leash attaches to it so the dog can run back and forth and have quite a bit of running space.
I have seen lots of people in town with a chain link fence type enclosure for their dogs, I don't know how expensive that would be though.

We are very fortunate to live on a farm with about 45 acres. Our house sits a long ways from the road and the dogs are allowed to roam free. Funny thing is that both of them rarely leave the area directly around the house. They are very lazy and just like to hang out on the porch or follow Mel to the lake.

We have fencing around our entire property and a big gate across the driveway that stays shut when the dogs are outside. They are inside babies though, but love to play and run outside.

We have a chain link kennel that we put the dogs in when we are outside for long periods of time. I do not let the dogs out there when we are not outside with them.
One of my dogs does not like strange people and will bite if given the chance, and since we live in a small town with kids walking around I do not want to take any chances of a kid walking up to the kennel and getting bit.

We have a 10x10 dog run. We only have them out there when we are home. They can go out for extended times on nice days but I get mad when I see people who just leave their dogs in there all the time. They are indoor babies and a large part of the family. I have been looking on our Freecycle for some side panels to extend it some so they have more room to play. We used to put them on chains outside. They really like to dig thogh and tore the yeard up pretty badly.

We have most of our backyard fenced with chain link. Jack Russells are well known for taking off after small creatures and get stuck in holes. So we don't take any chances with ours. They love to run so this way we don't have to tie them up.

We have a 6ft wood privacy fence around our back yard. King has the full run of the yard. He mostly hangs out under the deck near his dogloo though. He likes to be in a "den". When he was an inside only dog he used to sleep in my closet. I had to leave the door cracked so he could get in and out.
