Does anyone have a chipper/shredder? We are thinking of investing in one of the DR Chippers that will chip branches up to 3" in diameter, anything bigger would just go in the wood stove. They are so expensive that we are really rolling the idea around a while before we decide. Sure would be great to clean up the woods near the house and make me some mulch at the same time. Best part would be that the mulch would not be dyed or treated with any unfriendly chemicals. The dyed mulch is a huge thing in this area and I'm just not crazy about it at all.

Well it's been ordered. We are getting the DR Chipper that will take branches up to 4 1/2" in diameter. It connects to our tractor so we can easily get it right where we need it. Looks like a lot of chipping will be going on here in a few days. All the mulch I want! Mel got a deal on it where you use it for 1 year and then pay for it if you like it. That will give me plenty of time to find out if it's worth it and if it's as easy to use as the ad says.

The saga of the chipper continues......
The company that was supposed to deliver it - did not. They kept calling and rescheduling the delivery and then not showing up. This went on for 3 days and finally we contacted the company that Mel ordered from. They use another company for shipping. He could not get a definate delivery date from either company and finally just cancelled the order. :fight: He kept cancelling classes and rushing to be home (he was supposed to do the actual unloading of the thing from their truck :icon2: ).
Now we are back to considering the chipper at Lowes. It's a Toro brand for 1/2 the price of the DR Chipper one and even though it will not do such big logs, I think it would be fine. Big logs get burned in the wood stove in the first place.
I'll let you know if we ever actually get the thing :mwhistle:

Pat I'll be fascinated to know because dh and I also have batted the idea around, not so much now, we are on a small lot, and I'm not even sure if I'm going to continue veggie gardening
but we have trees, that shed branches, we do a lot of pruning and chipping the stuff just makes such sense.
I agree, no weird stuff in the mulch, and it's mulch already or compost ready.
toro is a great brand. I think you are sensible to buy locally anyways, because then they can fix it if it goes wonky or needs a part. Dealing with a company that can't even get their shipping act together would be a nightmare.
