I seen a homemade broom this past summer and it was kinda neat. Have you ever tried making one?

Here's an interesting link with some information on growing broom corn and broom making. http://www.story-lovers.com/listsbroommaking.html And some historical pictures of people harvesting broom corn. http://www.rootsweb.com/~okgarvin/broomcorn.html Another with basic instruction: http://www.covenantofrhiannon.org/broom3.htm Old fashioned mamma 10-19-2003, 05:21 PM And more: http://www.everlastingsflorals.com/BroomCorn.htm A wonderful picture of a cornbroom. I have made a broom with a sassafras for the handle which I gathered out of the woods and I grew broomcorn and used that for the sweep. You can buy broomcorn seed and it grows like fieldcorn except it does not grow a cob of corn. maggie 06-23-2008, 09:07 AM A friend gave me some broom-corn seeds a couple of years ago. I'm hoping they'll still be OK to germinate as I'd love to grow some and try making a broom. It seems like such a fun thing to do! nanagail 06-23-2008, 09:22 PM Darrell always ruins my brooms. So, maybe I should learn this haha. Gail maggie 06-24-2008, 06:33 AM If I were you Gail I'd just be grateful he knows how to use one! nanagail 06-24-2008, 01:22 PM I guess. But, when he does use it, he pushes down so hard on it as he sweeps. Then when I go to use it, the bristles are all laying down. I try to hide the good one so he don't ruin it. I'm very blessed. I have trouble sweeping with my back and he's always right there to offer to help. God love him. maggie 06-24-2008, 09:08 PM I know what you mean. Nothing worse than a flat broom! My DH gets a little too enthusiastic when he sweeps the pine needles from our large deck around the house. Fortunately he has one broom set aside for that job, and I never use it! |
