I've started to save material from old aprons that I'm picking up at yard sales and the thrift store in order to make an old fashioned quilt from material of days gone by.

I've also just recently found a quilt for $1.00 made from material of clothes worn way back in time.

I've always used new 100% cotton, but I'm wanting to make a quilt using only old material.

Have you done that?

I haven't done one myself. But one that has been passed down through several generations in my family is one that was made using a wedding dress belonging to my g.g.g.g.grandmother (7 generations back from me) and her husbands shirts. I have it on my wall in my bedroom, I love it dearly and it is a link to my personal history, my heritage, and a thread from the past.

I have been saving various pieces of ds's baby clothes and clothes he's outgrown in hopes of making one from all of them.

I have a couple that my grandmother made and that's eactly what she used........ whatever material she had whether it be from a shirt, etc.

Oh Melissa, what a treasure you have. I seen one like that done at a quilt show and it was stunning. They had also incorporated lace from different clothing, handkerchiefs and a baptismal gown. At the show, they had little write ups about the quilt. I've never seen a more beautiful quilt.

Aussie mamma, you'll treasure that quilt once its made.

I think in doing this, its a link to the past, reminds us of where we've come from and others that were in our lives. Although mine will be made from old aprons, mine will remind me of the pioneer woman who worked so hard to make this country what it is today.

Aprons, what a neat idea!

I have used material from the kid's clothes to makes block quilts (they are still in progress) I will give it to them when they are all older. I am also sewing on badges, ribbons and such that they have received over the years for sports, accomplishments. I find that I never know where to put them because you can't hang them all up all the time so this way they will be incorporated into the quilt and they will still have their mementos.

Melissa, what a treasure you have there.

I have been saving scraps from my boys clothing and also purchasing fabric in their favorite cartoon characters. Someday, I'll piece something together as a memory quilt for them when they are older.

Wow, that's so neat Melissa. Do you have a picture of it by any chance? I'd love to see it :)

I've always wanted to make a quilt from old fabrics--someday I'd like to make one with fabrics from our clothes, sheets, etc. and no purchased fabric.
