View Full Version : What type of ornamental "junk" do you have in your garden?
Old fashioned mamma 10-16-2003, 04:19 AM Because I've just started the gardens here (there were none when we moved) I don't have any of this yet. But I've seen old chairs, cribs, water pumps and the likes in some of the flowerbeds here. I've also seen fence gates (which I love) used along with milk cans.
Do you use old "junk" in your gardens and if so what?
Aussie Mamma 10-16-2003, 12:59 PM I have lots of stuff I've carried in from the beach (smoothed, broken shells; oyster shells, etc.) that I plan to make stepping stones from. Does that count? I haven't made any yet since we want to move (I think I'd just rather wait until we get settled).
paelthom 10-17-2003, 03:46 PM I have a bird house on a pole, a rock that say's Mom's Garden, a Squirrel statue with a leaf that holds water for the birds, some big shells and big rocks that I use to outline the border of the flower beds. I would like more and have found a wicker chair that I want to use to plant a vine around next year.

I just love "junk" in my garden ... I call it garden architecture :sun_smile
Even my husband brings me home things that other folks throw away and says I can create something with it.
I use old frypans, saucepans, washing machine tubs to plant in. I have an old wicker shelf that holds plant pots. I turned an old wheelbarrow and an old garden umbrella into a lovely planter.
If you have time, stop by my homepage and see some of the "junk" in my garden.
Michelle 02-17-2004, 01:01 PM I actually don't have any. I'd like to get some stepping stones, but as my yard isn't big to begin with, I don't want to clutter it up any.
duckduckgoose007 02-20-2004, 09:49 PM We have a Blue Gazing Ball & a small [rusty] old metal stool [found in the junk, somewhere] Jim puts a Strawberry pot on top of it. We have many different rocks we have collected from other states. Jim also has a rock garden [we bought a truckload of rocks for this] We have a "Shepherd's Hook" we hand a plant on. We used to have a birdbath but now we just use the large base of a plastic pot. It sits under our Quince bush. Easy to wash & keep clean & the birds have the bush for cover if they get nervous. We do have about 4 concrete stand-up planters on our front steps. I usually put Red Geraniums, some Dusty-miller, dark Purple Lobela & some kind of hanging down vine. :icon_wink Oh....almost forgot the Turkey Decoy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :icon_wink
maggie 04-21-2004, 08:58 AM WOW! Linda, I just opened your site and it looks so inviting. I have bookmarked it so I can check it out at my leisure later. It looks really interesting. :)
SusieJD 04-21-2004, 12:30 PM I found an old chimney linier in a junk pile on the property that I plan to make a planter out of for my sitting area. I've collected all the old cement blocks and made them into "steps" for my potted plants.

forestdale 04-21-2004, 08:02 PM I have two bird baths, one in the front and one in the vegie garden. The front one has a statue of a sitting girl buddha in it. the birds sit on her legs when they visit. I have a bench seat in the front garden and two garden arches and that's about it.
Linda, lovely web site. I'll look at it properly later. I love your wheelbarrow and umbrella.
