View Full Version : What kind of wild meat have your eaten or would you consider eating
Old fashioned mamma 05-18-2004, 01:56 PM Here we've eaten deer, moose, elk & caribou, partridge. Dh and I were talking about squirrels yesterday and although I've enjoyed the wild meat when I was eating meat and my family loves wild meat, I would not considering cooking a squirrel nor a few other animals that others have eaten.
How about you?
Aussie Mamma 05-18-2004, 02:18 PM I have had deer and was tricked into eating rabbit when I was a kid. I can't stomach the thought of anything now except poultry or seafood.
maggie 05-18-2004, 10:28 PM We enjoyed eating rabbit regularly until the Calici virus was introduced to NZ. We've also eaten venison and wild pork.
In New Orleans we ate alligator (very bland white meat) and in France my DH ate snails...while I looked on feeling slightly nauseated and disgusted! :snorkel:
I've tried duck and goose but hate it, but wild turkey is OK as long as it's not too strong.
We don't have elk, moose, caribou etc in NZ.
I wonder how many of you eat sheepmeat (lamb)? It's a staple food in NZ. YUM!
sunshine 05-19-2004, 12:33 AM I've eaten most meats: deer, rabbit, squirrel, racoon, possum, rattlesnake, buffalo, pheasant, quail, dove, wild turkey, alligator, squid, snails, termites, . . . . .
I have not had elk, or moose-- as they are not in our area. . . .
There really isn't too much I won't at least try--- some of the above, I'd rather not have again, unless I'm starving. :icon2:
Canadian gardener 05-19-2004, 03:08 AM Moose, caribou, elk, deer, grouse, quail, rabbit, and bear.
Lots of different fish. Oysters, clams, crabs all caught in the wild.
Buffalo I've eaten but it's raised. I like and eat lamb but it's pricey so it's not on our regular menu.
I grew up eating mostly wild meat that my dad filled our freezer with as did many kids living up north. I remember thinking when we moved out of the Yukon and didn't have moose meat anymore that beef tasted funny and was a very poor substitute for moose meat.
Now we eat supermarket meats. Dh isn't a hunter and while both my kids are, it's been a long time since they went on the family hunting trip in the fall due to classes at college. When they were homeschooled like their cousins, my sister's kids the annual hunting trip was the high point of the year.

SusieJD 05-20-2004, 12:21 AM Oh , lets see....Bear (I shot myself - won't do it again because I didn't like the sweet taste. I won't shoot something that I won't eat), deer, elk, buffalo, rabbit, squirrel, rattle snake, octopus, wild boar, possum and muskrat, Canadian goose, partridge, pheasant and duck. I once caught and ate a shark, does that count?
