Look at this guy! Could spring be far behind here in the north?
He's a Rose Breasted Grosbeak. I saw him yesterday afternoon, but didn't spot a mate anywhere. I refilled my feeders with sunflower seeds, that's probably what attracted him.

Gosh! How unusual he is, Susie. That red chest is so lovely. Is the female the same?

The females are brown with darker brown streaks and (get this now) WHITE eyebrows! Not as flashy, but pretty. They have very large and strong beaks for breaking into pine and sunflower seeds. We usually also have the yellow grosbeak in the summer too. If one shows up, I'll get his picture.

They also like big bugs, like potato bugs (they are called "potato bug birds" too) and other insects

We also have "cross beaks" here too. They are born with regular beaks and as they develope, the beak crosses.
