Do you have a woodpecker that considers your trees his own? We have a big old red headed woodpecker and that fella can make quite a racket. We have him (or one just like him) every year and Mel will not cut down one dead tree in the back because the birds like it. Luckily it's not anywhere near the house. In the past the woodpecker has decided to peck on the gutters a time or two and you really think something is going to break. I love to watch him though. He is a beautiful bird.

There are dozens of them around us! You can hear them in the woods, early in the morning, pick at the dead trees. They pick at our telephone pole out front as well, that's when I get to see them. So beautiful! There are several varities here, I'll have to look up their names.

We have four different kinds that hang out around here; a common flicker, a downy, a red-bellied, and a pileated (the pileated is huge and I've only seen him a few times and wow can he pound trees loudly!). So far they haven't found out that the house has wood siding, lol. The downy and red-bellied use the birdfeeder all winter and I really enjoy watching them.
