View Full Version : Who knits and crochets and if you do, what do you make?
Old fashioned mamma 10-09-2003, 01:34 AM I knit, but haven't tackled crocheting as of yet.
I love to knit afghans and baby sweaters. I've always wanted to learn how to knit on 4 needles, but haven't mastered that as of yet.
You?
sunshine 10-10-2003, 04:34 AM I prefer crochet- I make hats, scarves, toys, slippers, hair scrunchies, towel toppers, afghans, doilies, curtains, bedspreads, Christmas tree ornaments. . . . .
I knit some and make hats, vests, scarves, afghans and a few other very simple projects.
smnoel 10-10-2003, 10:47 PM I'm a beginner at crochet and have only made the baby's blanket and am currently 4 skeins into Zachary's blanket. I'm learning new stitches and hope to get better at it in time.
I've done knitting, but only basic stitches. I would prefer to learn knitting, but was more comfortable for some reason getting into crochet first.
Well I knit dish rags. This year though I plan to start making a red white and blue blanket.
I would love to learn crochet and have a book to learn from, but some how I can't seem to sit still long enough to get it going!
Missy 10-16-2003, 06:58 AM I am trying very hard to teach myself knitting from a variety of websites and a book I have. So far I have accomplished a 4"x4" swatch of garter stiching.
However, :D I am excited to say, I finished an afghan in crochet that I started in 1999 for DS. I finished it about an hour or so ago. I was so happy to have it done I just spread it out on the floor and looked at it for a little while. Yay!!! LOL I have a few UFO's (UnFinished Objects, ;) )laying around the house and havn't gotten to many of them this year.
I have never (as of yet) crochet anything other than flat items, scarves, afghans, dish cloths, etc. But I'd like to learn hats and baby booties and socks.
Old fashioned mamma 10-16-2003, 02:34 PM Melissa, you keep going girl. Keep those 4 x 4 inch squares and when you've done a number, sew them up into a small afghan. It'll be wonderful to look back to see how you've improved in your quilting.
I remember my first quilting project. I too had to teach myself and I started with a baby sweater. Not a good idea. I had to run to the neighbours each time I couldn't figure out a stitch and by the time the sweater was done, well the arms an adult could have worn, the body was long on one side, very tiny on the other side. It was hilarious. Funny how we learn things heh!!
jettsmom 11-08-2003, 06:21 PM I crochet now and then. I have recently made two baby afghans. I started a large afghan for my husband. I seem to only crochet in the winter and use the piece I'm working on to keep me warm.
Canadian gardener 11-24-2003, 10:29 PM I knit, dishcloths mostly, but right now I'm playing with some fluffy mohair that my freind was getting rid of. I was going to do a vest but I'm thinking of ripping that out and doing a lacy shawl with it. I don't have to fuss with shaping then, just knit to my heart's content. I like lacy patterns with an easy repeat, they don't show mistakes! :p
I did a scarf out of that fun fur stuff, but it's too skimpy looking, I'm thinking to rip it out and make it much nicer and wider and longer.
Jettsmom I agree, I knit in the winter, and garden in the summer. The winter knitting helps keep me warm. :D
Unfortunately I don't always finish what I start. At least the garden keeps growing when I turn my back on it, but my knitting just sits there.
CraftyGardener 02-17-2004, 02:02 PM I knit and crochet. I just finished a knitted shawl and I'm working on a second one. I am also working on a mystery crochet afghan. I belong to another crafting site and a mystery afghan is organized ... the leader emails out so many rounds each night and we work away at it. I think we are close to three quarters finished and it is turning out wonderful ... uses all different kinds of crochet stitches. It is so neat to see the progress that everyone is making .. we're all doing the same stitches but with choices of colours all the afghans look different.
smnoel 02-17-2004, 02:08 PM Since my post, I've started learning a bit more in crochet. I made this rug a few days ago.

Still learning, but I really enjoy crochet.
Old fashioned mamma 02-17-2004, 03:10 PM I love that rug Sara. Was crocheting hard to do with material, rather than with the regular wool? How wide were the strips you crocheted with and what size crochet hook did you need to use?
Since posting this, I'm crocheting an afghan. I'm about 1/2 finished it. I can only do about 2-3 rows a night though. I'll post a picture once I get it developed.
CraftyGardener 02-17-2004, 04:15 PM Your rug is fabulous...lovely colours
smnoel 02-17-2004, 04:55 PM Crocheting with fabric is easier in some ways and more difficult in others. My strips are about 1.5 inch strips and I used a q hook. You could use smaller strips and a p hook. I started a little wider and found it tough on the wrists. It's nice because you don't have to make the strips perfect in size or width.
I cut up old sheets for part of it. lol It's great because you can use up scrap fabrics. Can buy really cheap 100% cotton.
I didn't turn in my edges because I didn't have the patience to make my fabric edges smooth. My next one I will, but I was just too anxious to do a rug this time. lol
Zachary's afghan is still sitting and waiting for me to finish. rofl Poor kid. He may be 18 before I actually complete it. I love working on that when it's a late night and we're watching tv.
SewCrafty 02-19-2004, 03:22 PM I crochet, knit by hand and machine although I haven't pulled my machines out at all this year.
Crocheting I usually make afghans, lapghans, rugs, doilies and toys and blankets for my cats.
Knitting I make sweaters, hats and mittens.
I have actually completed quite a few projects so far this winter. I am one of those that only crochet in the winter too.
I have 3 lapghans done, 2 afghans in the works. I have also knitted a couple of hats earlier this year.
Sara, I think you are doing great at crocheting! :thumb: I have never crocheted with fabric but am going to try it soon.
TariOronar 09-27-2008, 02:54 AM I knit. I've tried crocheting, but it was really pathetic. I've knit scarves, baby blankets, socks, headbands and hats. I really want to try a sweater next, but I havent gotten brave enough yet.
Grandma Nae 09-27-2008, 03:43 AM One of my DIL crochets, but I don't really have a clue. I've told her she needs to teach me how.
maggie 09-27-2008, 08:15 AM Crocheting is VERY easy. I taught myself from a book years ago when my girls were little. I used to love them in their sweet little crochet outfits! Now they look at photos back then and ask me why on earth I ever dressed them in those 'ridiculous outfits"!! :icon_roll
Nisaba 09-27-2008, 08:50 AM I don't like knitted clothing, so it's perhaps fortunate that I'm so retarded that I don't have the brainpower to manage ten fingers AND two knitting-needles as well as the yarn. I can just about manage ten fingers, a crocheting hook and the yarn. In the past, following patterns, I've made everything from crocheted handbags (which are lovely if you choose the right colours!) to tarot-deck covers, but I'm a past-master at squares. I have a thing for crocheted throw-rugs (one huge square in sequential rainbow-colours), bed-covers and blankets (carefully chosen colours, squares of thirteen rows each with a black row at the tenth and the thirteenth and sewn together with black), and I've even made myself tabards out of little squares planning on paper the sequence of colours to get dazzling diagonal stripes across my back and vertical stripes down my front. Gorgeous. It got stolen, though, and so much work went into it that I've never been able to come at making another one. If it involves squares, large or small, I will make it with no pattern. If it involves anything else, I'm good at following patterns. So far the only patterns I;'ve found for crocheted clothes look like the worst of 1950s-70s fashion, so I haven't followed patterns to make myself jumpers or anything else. Any decent un-dated patterns would be welcome.
sweetzinnias 09-27-2008, 01:10 PM I've knited some bags and blankets and scarves. I'm not very good and it takes me Forever! I crochet my doll wigs, i'm not very good at that and very self-taught, but it doenst really matter because the hair covers up any imperfections. My good friend can crochet up a storm with great stitch pattern and color changes. Seems like crocheting is the way to go for speed and simplicity.
GardenNut 09-28-2008, 12:53 AM I knit and crochet. Right now I'm working on a knitted shell for myself, socks for dh, and a fall jacket for myself. I make my boys' winter sweaters and vests because they're too expensive otherwise, if I can find them at all. Knitting is easy to do while I'm at soccer practice, or watching tv.
I need to crochet an afghan - the boys have grown so much, it's hard to snuggle all of us under one throw anymore.
nanagail 09-28-2008, 01:20 AM I can only crochet basic double and single crochet. I make afghans this way. My sister is really artistic in hers. She makes lovely doilies. I can't seem to remember what number I'm on. I can't keep my mind on it. So, I just do quilts. It's easier for me. Gail
maggie 09-28-2008, 02:10 AM I have a difficult problem with US crochet patterns! You guys use different names for stitches....e.g.what you call a treble is a double crochet to us....or vice versa! (I can never remember which way it goes....but I have to either go one stitch- step up or down to what is written in US patterns.)
It drives me nuts and makes all the mental adjustments exhausting! :sleepdepr
Our patterns follow the British patterns...and the US are different!
Who would have guessed you'd have to be different from the rest of the world!!:icon_roll :icon_roll
maggie 09-28-2008, 02:21 AM This is (what we call) a jersey that I knitted for my grandson. The wool was shorn from our sheep by my DH, and then I home-spun it. The brown, grey and cream wools are natural colours, but the orangey wool was dyed using onion skins.
nanagail 09-28-2008, 02:46 AM that is so cute. I would never try that, it would be too hard on my mind.lol Gail
sweetzinnias 09-28-2008, 06:16 PM thats amazing maggie, Well done!
Grandma Nae 09-28-2008, 06:38 PM It's beautiful!
renmerc446 10-01-2008, 07:37 PM Hi, I was a part of this group some time back and only just returned.
Anyway, I crochet. Mostly afgans for my friends. I also do scarves as well as laprugs for people my Mom helps out via her Church group. Right now I only use a single stitch but work in a pattern with colors.
I have found a DVD called Crochet Stitches in Motion. I've only watched one section but I think I can do that stitch easily enought. It helped because it showed both someone actually doing the stitch and the written pattern form.
