Anyone have some old wives tales or superstitions that regard to home or gardening?
First one I think of is that we need the cold winter to kill bugs. We have plenty of ice and snow every year and I think we still end up with plenty of bugs.
Which ones can you think of?

I'd also say about winter/cold killing bugs...but heck I've still had a few die-hard flies out in the cold sitting on my house in the sun...in Jan.

Well, I don't know how this pertains to "home or garden" but in a way, it does. If your right hand itches, there's money on it's way. If you left hand itches, your going to pay out money.
Strange as this sounds, It's happened to me.
How about "Red sky at night, sailors delight. Red sky in the morning, sailors take warning". Which means that the red sky at night is good weather and in the morning, bad weather is on the way.

How shall I put this....
Have you ever heard that there are "certain times" of the month that women should not go into the garden? I heard this one when I was much younger and had to work in the garden and thought "heck, any excuse to keep from going into the garden was a good one".

Susie, much the same saying is popular in NZ, but being an agricultural country, we say it slightly differently! :icon_wink
"Red sky at night, shepherds' delight. Red sky in the morning, shepherd's warning!"

I'll have to tell my friend "Cowboy Dell" about that one maggie! He was a sheep herder in Montana for many years.
There's another one, that may not be a legand - When the leaves on the maple trees are turned over, a rain is on it's way.
