Our kitchen was partially insulated. We had done a complete wall and part of a wall when we insulated the upstairs.

Yesterday when dh came home from work, we were talking about it still being cold in one area and also talking about our cupboards. I have wanted new cupboards since we moved here, but kept thinking of the cost. We decided we would take the one cupboard off the wall and insulate the rest of the wall yesterday. Here is what we did.

~we tore off the plaster and lathe.
~we needed 4 - 2 x 2's. Dh went into our gardening shed and found a couple old 2 x 4's that he wasn't using. Cost $0
~we needed R20 x 15 insulation. We had R20 x 24 which dh had left over from insulating the attic in his workshop. We got out the exacto knife and cut it to fit perfect. Cost $0
~we needed plastic to put over the insulation, between the insulation and gyproc. We had some leftover from insulating our living room, cost $0
~gyproc needed to be put on the wall. We had a full sheet and partial sheet, again leftover from when we insulated the living room. Were using the leftovers. Cost $0
~we had screws and nails leftover from our previous insulating jobs.

I love being able to be self-sufficient and being able to do all our own work. Not even sure the amount we saved in doing the actual job ourselves. I know it would have been in the hundreds of $$. But because of our self-sufficiency, we not only didn't pay a penny for the work, all the supplies didn't cost anything either.

I don't think it can get any more self-sufficient than that. You and your hubby are a awesome pair. Congrats on a job well done!

You guys amaze me!! That is just great, what a sense of accomplishment. We are .....eventually....building a new bathroom (thought it would be in the works by now but dh hasn't been home much) When we were talking about how much the supplies were going to be etc....I was calculating wood, beams etc and dh tells me we have all that plus a couple bags of insulation. Never know what he has hiding in that shed! :icon_wink So all the building materials are pretty much looked after. It's the tub, shower, sink and cabinet and flooring that are going to cost the money. Our toilet is new so we'll move that over plus the over toilet cabinet. I have a medicine cabinet that matches the over the toilet cabinet. (cape cod look) I also have a huge mirror from my Mom and Dad's old dresser that a local carpenter is going to frame for me.

Ooops, sorry CJ, stole the thread, I was off in "wish land" there for a minute. :mwhistle: :icon_wink

Great going CJ. Do you have your house done now? I know you have done quite a few rooms.
