I've asked this elsewhere, but I think it bares repeating here. Yesterday I picked up some organic ketchup, made by the Heinz company. As I walked around Sobey's, I noticed more and more organic foods, other than veggies and fruits. I'm wondering how organic are the foods when not purchased at health food stores. I'm wondering if because of the trend to more and more people both in the States and Canada wanting to go organic, whether some of these big companies are jumping on the bandwagon to earn our $$.

I know its suppose to be certified organic, but I'm wandering just what the laws are and how far they can stretch that word, "certified".

Do you trust all the foods that are now classified as "organic"?

Yes, I do trust the certified organic label. From the shows I've seen and things I've heard, the guidelines are strict and they are always monitored to make sure they are following them. That was something they talked about in the Nature of Things show that was on a couple weeks ago.

Here's a link http://www.wholefoods.com/issues/org_canada-standards.html

At this link: http://www.cbc.ca/consumers/market/files/food/organics/ it says
"No product can carry that label without first being inspected. The product has to meet a comprehensive set of rules overseen by the Canadian General Standards Board. The standards are voluntary - except in Quebec, where you can expect to pay large fines if you're caught misrepresenting your products."

I, too, trust the organic certification label.

I haven't noticed that much organic here other than the health food store. I would trust the label if I saw it elsewhere though.

Our Sobey's here and Zehrs is carrying ALOT of organic products now. I wondered at first if they could truly be and then also saw a program and felt more confident.
