Describe what you remember of the old outhouses that you might have visited.

I remember my great grannies. It was made of old lumber, weathered by rain, snow and ice. On both side walls, they had cut out 1/2 a moon. There were two "seats", although I'm not sure quite why. I sure didn't want to share a seat with anyone when I was in there, nor did I ever see 2 people in that at once.

She always had the old Eaton's catalogue there for reading and using!!

My grandfather's on his farm was similar in lumber, but had the odd magazine to use and read. I never seen the Eaton's catalogue there. And in grandpa's outhouse, there was only one "seat".

Describe the ones you've visited. :mwhistle:

I still have two out houses, one for summer and one for winter. It may be the same reason for a two-holer, it gives the Stuff time to settle a bit and dry out. Use them daily, BUT... I have store-bought paper, now...ha...

I remember my grandmother in the country having one when I was very small. I was scared that something would get me in there. I remember when she finally got indoor plumbing - Man was she happy.

~Lol, as a kid I remember my friends & I daring each other to look down in the hole and laughing hysterically. Peeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!:icon_lol:

~In girl scouts (on a camping trip) the rotating job of cleaning the loo came to me and my friend, we were howling with laughter as we did it.

~My in-laws summer place had an outhouse, a 2 seater with a moon cutout and an old Wards catalog for reading. They built a new house with indoor plumbing and now the old outhouse stores wood.

I've had quite a few outhouses in my life. I remember the first though more than any. It was on my Grandparents farm. It sat right next to the machine shed, a walk from the kitchen. No matter what time of day or night, no matter how much my young uncles teased about bears and wilde cats, we'd trot out there. It was a "Two Holer" because of all the young uncles we had. They could use the outhouse two at a time and then go back to their chores. It was quite awhile before my grandparents installed indoor plumbing. Below is a picture of my grandmother, my sister Geri and me. I'm the little black haired one.

You can't see the outhouse, it's behind the car. But it's there.

On my farm in MI, I had a useable outhouse that got quite a bit of use until we put the new well and plumbing in.

I also know people who use their outhouses as a reading room. They go in to do their thing, a little reading and peace. Some have lovely curtains and sky lights. Some look like little houses. Those were the days!

Grandma and I were talking about outhouses. She said she had a hard time when it came to indoor plumbing. It just didn't seem right to do that in the house, she said. :D With well problems and using our outhouse all summer, 10 yo ds had a hard time using the indoor one when we solved our water problem. He continued to use the outhouse when it was no longer necessary. When we asked him why, he said the same thing grandma said, it didn't seem right!
